Buyer’s guide

How to choose an AI visibility tool

This guide covers AI search visibility monitoring: tools that put the questions your buyers ask to AI assistants and record whether the answers mention or cite you.

In a demo most of these tools look alike, a dashboard with a score on it. The differences sit in the settings, and they decide what you can do with the data. Below are six of them, by tool type rather than by brand.

We build CiteFlow, one of these tools. Each section says where it sits, and one section says when another type of tool is the better fit.

§ 01 · Six questions

Where AI visibility tools differ

01

How often does it ask?

Daily checks

Some tools ask every day. Daily data catches short swings, but AI answers also vary from one run to the next, so a single day can move without anything on your site changing.

Weekly or one-off checks

Weekly tools give a steadier line to compare against. A one-off audit tells you where you stand today, and cannot tell you whether answers changed after you shipped a fix.

Where CiteFlow sits: Once a week on paid plans. The free scan is a one-off sample.

02

Who picks the questions, and how many?

You write the list

Some tools track only the prompts you enter. You keep control, and the results are only as useful as the questions you thought to ask. Price often grows with the length of the list.

A large prompt pool

Other tools report across a large pool of prompts the vendor collects. You get a wide view of a topic, with less say over which questions stand in for your buyers.

Where CiteFlow sits: On paid plans, CiteFlow drafts 10 buyer questions per site from your site's content, and you can edit, replace or remove them. It is a small set on purpose, short enough for one person to read each week.

03

Which AI assistants does it ask?

A fixed set in every plan

Some tools include the same assistants in every plan, so the price you see covers all of them.

Assistants as add-ons

Other tools price some assistants separately. The plan you compare may not include the assistant your buyers use, so check before you compare prices.

Where CiteFlow sits: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, on every paid plan, every week. It asks no other assistants.

04

What does it keep from each answer?

A score

Some tools roll answers up into a visibility score or a share-of-voice percentage. A score is easy to chart and hard to act on, because it does not say which answer left you out.

The sources behind each answer

Other tools keep each answer, or at least the pages it cited. That shows which pages the assistant cited instead of yours: the pages you would need to compete with.

Where CiteFlow sits: For every question and assistant, CiteFlow records whether the answer mentioned you, whether it cited your site, and which URLs it cited.

05

Does it help you change anything?

Reports only

Many tools stop at the report. Someone on your team turns the findings into tasks and ships them.

Changes to the site

A few tools propose or make changes to the site itself. Ask what form the change takes and who approves it before it goes live.

Where CiteFlow sits: On paid plans, the Auto-Fix Agent opens a pull request your developer reviews (2 runs a month on Standard, 10 on Pro). On WordPress, the CiteFlow plugin generates schema, llms.txt and crawler rules from the site's content.

06

How is it priced?

Per prompt or per assistant

The bill grows with each prompt or assistant you add. Price the list you actually need, not the entry plan.

Per seat or per tier

The bill is set by users or by plan. It is easier to budget, so look at what the tier caps instead: sites, prompts or checks.

Where CiteFlow sits: A fixed monthly price per paid plan. Standard is $49 a month for one website, Pro is $149 a month for 5 websites, and both include the same weekly tracking per site.

§ 02 · Before you buy

Questions to ask any vendor

  1. Which assistants are included in the price I am being quoted, and which cost extra?
  2. Who writes the questions, and can I change them?
  3. How often is each question asked, and is every assistant asked every time?
  4. For a given answer, can I see the pages it cited?
  5. Does the tool change anything on my site, and who approves the change?
  6. What does my plan cap: sites, prompts, assistants or checks?
§ 03 · Fit

Which type fits you

When another type of tool fits better

  • You need daily readings, or hundreds of tracked prompts across a topic. On paid plans CiteFlow asks 10 questions per site once a week, which is too few for that job.
  • You need an assistant outside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. CiteFlow does not ask any others.
  • You want a number for a monthly slide and nobody will act on the findings. A score-only tool is less work.

Where CiteFlow fits

  • You want to see which of your buyers’ questions get an answer that leaves you out, and which pages the assistant cited instead.
  • You have a developer who can review a pull request, or a WordPress site, and you want the fix to start from the same finding.
§ 04 · FAQ

Common questions

What does an AI visibility tool measure?
It puts a set of questions to AI assistants and records what comes back: whether the answer mentions your brand, whether it links to your site, and which other sources it cites. Most of the differences between tools come down to which questions get asked and how often.
Is tracking enough without fixing anything?
Tracking shows where you stand; it does not change your site. Decide who will act on the findings before you pick a tool, because that decides whether you need fix features at all.
How many questions do I need to track?
Enough to cover what buyers ask before they choose a vendor in your category, and few enough that someone reads the results. CiteFlow tracks 10 per site on paid plans; agencies and large catalogs often need more than one business does.
What does the CiteFlow free scan include?
A one-off audit of how AI assistants can crawl and read your site, plus a sample of 5 buyer questions put to one assistant (Perplexity first), and which sites the answers cited instead of you. It is a sample, not tracking. Weekly tracking across all four assistants is on paid plans.
Can any tool promise that AI answers will cite you?
No. Assistants choose their own sources, and their answers change from run to run. A tool can show where you stand and what to fix next, then track whether answers change after you ship the fix.
Which AI assistants matter most?
The ones your buyers use. Ask a few customers, or look for referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics. Then check that the tool asks those assistants on the plan you are buying.

See where your site stands

The free scan audits how AI assistants read your site and puts a sample of buyer questions to one assistant. No card needed.
